Ancient Greece is one of the most important civilisations in human history. It was a period that saw Greece militarily dominate much of the southern Mediterranean that began around 1100 Bc during the dark ages and ended around 146 bc with the invasion of the Roman empire. During this period, Greek civilisation gave birth to many new ideas and ways of thinking in the areas of politics, medicine and philosophy, many of which are now considered Greek legacies as they have endured the test of time and can still be seen in use today. Democracy is defined as â€Å"a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people collectively, and is administered by them, or officer’s appointed by them, the common people, a state or society characterised by recognition of equality of rights and privileges for all people, political, social or legal equality† (Chambers Dictionary).
